Mama Cucina

With our work we are often out and about all around the city during meal times. It’s just part of the job to sometimes have to eat lunch in the car or grab a quick bite to tide us over for an evening appointment during dinner time. But every once in a while, we take the time to try someplace new, often at lunch, and take a break from the rush. A couple of weeks ago we were near Innsbrook and I suggested Mama Cucina. https://www.facebook.com/MamaCucinaRVA/

This little Italian place has been in the strip shopping center at the front of Innsbrook at Cox and Broad for years. I’ve driven by this place for over a decade and it never got on my radar. So back to the story. Heather and I stopped in for lunch. Heather got the Chicken Pesto sandwich and loved it. The bread was fresh and the sub delicious she said. I got the Ravioli with Walnut Cheese Sauce and on one bite I was hooked. O My Word was this lunch good.

Based on a fabulous lunch we made a pact to try and eat dinner there soon and last night was the night. We walked in early, 515pm, and the place was packed. One of the staff asked if we had reservations and of course we didn’t but they found us a two top and down we sat.  The place maybe has 20 total tables so it’s pretty small but at 5pm on a Wednesday is was in full swing. Service was quick and efficient with salad and bread dropped at the table promptly. Heather went for the Manicotti with Walnut Cheese Sauce and I had the Veal Bolognese. Now I know a lot of people frown on those that eat veal but everyone once in a while I will have to try a new dish and last night was the night.

We each had an adult beverage and nibbled on their yummy bread and devoured our salads while waiting for our main courses to arrive. First off – the portions are huge. Both Heather and I ate till we were full and still brought home enough food for 3 more meals. Heather loved her manicotti and while my veal was very tasty, I think I’m going to try the Saltimbocca the next time. We had no room for desserts so trying those will have to wait till our next visit.

If you have never tried this Italian gem in the West End of Richmond you owe it to yourself to give it a visit. Just remember it does get crowded – and there is a reason for that.
